Vihula commune, Altja, Lääne-Virumaa

Altja Inn and Net Shields

Branch of the Museums of Virumaa, Altja Inn and Net Shields introduce the history and way of life of the coastal region of Lääne-Virumaa. It is also a functioning inn these days.

Fields in Altja were small and sandy just like in other coastal villages, these alone could not feed the people. Sea had to provide something to go with the bread.
Net sheds were restored in 1973-74 after old photographs taken of the barns and after the memories of the habitants of Altja. The barns were mostly built by the crew of a fishing boat. The crew was made up of men from different families who had to have netting of the same size. Besides drying the nets the barns were also used for keeping fishing tackle.
